At Safety Letterbox, parcel and mail safety and security is personal

How a chance conversation led to us becoming experts in the design and build of strong, secure mail and parcel boxes that now provide peace of mind to over two million households in the UK.

At The Safety Letterbox Company, we’ve built a global reputation for our razor-sharp focus on compliance with building, fire and other standards satisfying safety officers and building managers whilst equally pleasing architects and interior designers too.

Today we have over 180 different parcel and mailbox designs – on, in, through the wall and freestanding – to ensure no one can use the letterplate for anti-social behaviour, to prey on the vulnerable or commit crime. And we can advise on the best deployment of CCTV and door entry systems to reduce the possibility of unauthorised entry into a building under the pretence of delivering mail.

But our commitment to letterbox safety and security began in 1986 as a result of a personal encounter. When our founder, Ian Brown MBE, visited an elderly couple on the top floor of a tower block on behalf of Swansea Round Table. The couple told him about their fear of intimidation, unwanted items and arson attacks being made through their letter box with no means of escape, and how they sat keeping watch over their front door every night. As an engineer and business owner, Ian went away and solved the problem by designing and manufacturing a secure mailbox with intumescent components which he donated to the couple, giving them security and peace of mind.

Meeting new standards in a post-Grenfell world

37 years later we continue to be pioneers in creating innovative, yet practical, high-quality mail and parcel solutions that carefully balance aesthetics with safety and security, putting the minds of two million homeowners across 65,000 sites and in a wide range of properties at rest. Our Research & Development team is constantly working on safety and security features that comply to the latest standards and push boundaries in testing, innovation and design.

For example, we were the first instigator and creator of 1hr fire-rated mailboxes to the previous BS 476 Part 22 standard. Over time, demand for fire rated mailboxes has grown, especially for use inside fire escape areas such as apartment lobbies and reception areas. Following the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, we made the decision to extend our specification even further to ensure our fire-rated products were capable of holding back or containing a fire for an even greater length of time

Tragically and shockingly, Grenfell was the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom for over three decades and the country’s worst residential fire since WWII.  Following Dame Judith Hackitt’s rigorous report the government introduced its ‘Building a Safer Future’ policy and the Building (Amendment) Regulations 2018 (SI 2018/1230) came into force.

By working with the leading global testing, inspection and certification company, Warrington Fire, we are proud to have become the first company to achieve full Fire Rating (two hour integrity) to BS EN 1363-1:2012, on this specifically created group of products, where failure in service is simply not an option.

The fire-rated test involved placing our mailboxes in a furnace and exposing them to heat of 1030 degrees C – as hot as molten lava. 136 minutes later, they showed no signs of weakness or deterioration.

A strong culture of safety and security in everything we do

Another issue we are committed to reducing is anti-social behaviour and crime.

Back in 2005 we were asked by Cleveland Arson Task Force Group to find a way to stop unwanted items being pushed through letterboxes and other crime associated with the front door. After much development and testing, we created the Flaplock™, a simple to fit, neat and affordable retro-fitted solution to any front door which prevented attempts to start arson through the letterbox when no accelerant was involved.

Today our range is much wider and prevents a much broader range of crimes. In fact our choice of mail and parcel boxes includes designs that meet the stringent TS009 standard issued by Secured By Design (the Police Preferred Specification for all security products that can deter or reduce crime).

In 2019 Secured by Design issued a report that stated there were “growing, multiple problems with delivering post to buildings with multiple dwellings or bedrooms” and we are proud that we have developed and manufactured solutions that help to prevent data and identify theft, fishing, unauthorised access and more.
