Safety Letterbox Company is Awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2026
The Safety Letterbox Company Ltd has been awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2026, recognising four decades of pioneering work in safer mail and parcel delivery solutions—including its industry-leading fire-rated products.
The King’s Award for Enterprise is the UK’s most respected business honour, celebrating organisations that drive innovation, create opportunity and strengthen the economy. The Safety Letterbox Company is proud to be recognised for its sustained innovation in secure, compliant and 2 hour fire rated mail and parcel box design.
In 2026, the company is one of only 185 organisations across the UK and the first female led business in West Glamorgan to receive a King’s Award. The honour comes as the business marks its 40th anniversary, building on a legacy that includes introducing fire-rated mailboxes in 2002 and fire rated parcel boxes in 2019 and continuing to expand its range to meet evolving building and fire-safety requirements.

A legacy rooted in safety
The company’s origins trace back to a simple but powerful insight. While delivering a food parcel to an elderly couple living on the top floor of a tower block in Swansea, founder Ian Brown MBE heard first-hand concerns about arson attacks and threats through the letterplate—with no easy means of escape. Determined to help, he designed and fitted a protective box behind the door with a device to extinguish fire, launching the original Homeguard product and laying the foundations for the business that followed.
Early feedback from architects and developers quickly broadened the vision—from a behind-the-door solution to products that could be installed on a wall, in a wall, free-standing or through-wall. Within a year, the first wider product range, Sentry, was created—setting the pattern for decades of customer-led innovation.

A word from our CEO
“This is an incredibly proud moment for our whole team and everyone associated with The Safety Letterbox Company. To receive a King’s Award in our 40th year makes it even more meaningful. It recognises the ingenuity, commitment and standards that have run through this business since the very beginning—and that still guide what we do every day.”
— Alison Orrells, CEO
Alison joined the family business in 1998 and has led the company as CEO since 2007, overseeing continued growth, product development and investment—while keeping safety, specification and service at the centre of the business.
What happens next
The company will mark the achievement with a formal presentation visit from the Lord Lieutenant and a reception later in the year, where award recipients are invited to celebrate alongside other UK businesses recognised this year.
