Our ongoing commitment to R&D drove us to test our FR1, FR2, and FR3 Fire Rated Letterbox Range further. Initially, these products met the BS 476 Part 22: 1987 standard with a 60-minute fire rating. We aimed to achieve a 120-minute rating due to increasing demand for fire-rated mailboxes in evacuation points.
In October 2019 and October 2020, Warrington Fire rigorously tested both single and banked units. As a result, they passed the 2-hour test, now complying with the BS EN 1363-1:2012 standard. Consequently, these results ensure our mailboxes deliver enhanced safety and reliability in fire escape areas.
The Safety Letterbox Company’s Research and Development team partnered with WarringtonFire to achieve a full two-hour fire rating. This certification complies with BS EN 1363-1:2012 for our specially designed product range. We are proud to be the first company to reach this milestone.
BS 476 – Part 22
This superior group of Fire Rated products offers a series of features that achieve a ‘two-hour integrity’ rating. Due to its complex design, this product range is more costly. However, it meets the higher specifications demanded by fire officers.
Class 0 Rating: BS 476 Part 6 & 7
Our products achieve a Class 0 rating by meeting BS476: Part 7 and Part 6 standards. EXOVA Warringtonfire conducted these tests. Consequently, this certification satisfies fire protection requirements and provides an affordable alternative for Class 0 compliance.
Research and Development
Our R&D team worked with Exova Warrington to achieve the first full two-hour fire rating to BS 476 Part 22. Consequently, we remain committed to advancing fire-rated solutions. Additionally, we are investing in further testing to expand our product range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a fire rated letterbox solution?
A fire-rated solution is crucial for ensuring safety and compliance with building regulations, especially in high-risk areas. These solutions are designed to withstand fire for a specified period, helping to contain flames and prevent the spread of smoke. This added protection not only safeguards property but also enhances occupant safety during emergencies.
While fire-rated products may come with a higher initial cost, their long-term benefits in protecting lives and reducing damage make them a vital investment.
How long are the fire rated letterboxes tested for?
Mailboxes featured in the Fire Rated BS 476 Part 22 range have been tested for up to ‘two hour integrity’ only. This standard typically tests the material that the product is made of to see if it will ‘fuel a fire’.
Are there any other fire rated mailbox solutions available?
All mailboxes can be fitted with a FireTrace™ which is a single use automatic fire extinguisher. The FireTrace is fitted internally in a mailbox and in the event of a fire being started in a mailbox. The heat generated softens the tube which punctures the item at the hottest point (approximately 80º). The gas contained in the tub is released into the seat of the fire extinguishing the fire at the source.
Can the dimension of the mailbox or aperture be changed?
No. The Fire Rated range has been tested at the specified dimensions and any adjustment in sizing will result in the mailbox not meeting the Fire Rating standards. We have three different types of mailboxes that meet these fire standards, The FR1 Vertical Mailbox, FR2 Horizontal product and the through the wall FR3 mailbox.
Do these mailboxes meet the Secured by Design Homes 2024 Guide?
Fire Rated Mailboxes are fitted with an additional security bridge feature so that they comply with the Secured by Design Homes 2024 guidelines. Combining a security bridge with a mailbox from the Fire Rated range means it will comply with both Fire Rating and Secured by Design Homes 2024 guidelines.
