Driven by our commitment to research and development, we crafted our range of Fire Rated mailboxes.
With three versions of fire-rated mailboxes available, in vertical, horizontal and through the wall configurations, we have designed these mailboxes to meet the specific needs of any development.
Initially compliant with the BS 476 Part 22: 1987 standard, these products had a fire rating of 60 minutes. However, due to the growing demand for fire-rated mailboxes at evacuation points, we set our sights on achieving a 120-minute rating.
In October 2019 and October 2020, Warrington Fire conducted thorough testing on both our single and banked units, to which we are proud to say that they successfully passed and now adhere to the BS EN 1363-1:2012 standard. This accomplishment ensures our mailboxes provide enhanced safety and reliability in fire escape areas.
The Safety Letterbox Company’s Research and Development team worked with WarringtonFire to achieve a full two-hour fire rating. This certification complies with BS EN 1363-1:2012 for our specially designed product range. We are proud to be the first company to reach this milestone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a fire rated letterbox solution?
A fire-rated solution is crucial for ensuring safety and compliance with building regulations, especially in high-risk areas. These solutions are designed to withstand fire for a specified period, helping to contain flames and prevent the spread of smoke. This added protection not only safeguards property but also enhances occupant safety during emergencies. While fire-rated products may come with a higher initial cost, their long-term benefits in protecting lives and reducing damage make them a vital investment.
Are there any other fire rated mailbox solutions available?
All mailboxes can be fitted with a FireTrace™ which is a single use automatic fire extinguisher. The FireTrace is fitted internally in a mailbox and in the event of a fire being started in a mailbox. The heat generated softens the tube which punctures the item at the hottest point (approximately 80º). The gas contained in the tub is released into the seat of the fire extinguishing the fire at the source.
How long are the fire rated letterboxes tested for?
Mailboxes featured in the Fire Rated BS 476 Part 22 range have been tested for up to ‘two hour integrity’ only. This standard typically tests the material that the product is made of to see if it will ‘fuel a fire’.
Can the dimension of the mailbox or aperture be changed?
No. The Fire Rated range has been tested at the specified dimensions and any adjustment in sizing will result in the mailbox not meeting the Fire Rating standards. We have three different types of mailboxes that meet these fire standards, The FR1 Vertical Mailbox, FR2 Horizontal product and the through the wall FR3 mailbox.
Do these mailboxes meet the Secured by Design Homes 2024 Guide?
Fire Rated Mailboxes are fitted with an additional security bridge feature so that they comply with the Secured by Design Homes 2024 guidelines. Combining a security bridge with a mailbox from the Fire Rated range means it will comply with both Fire Rating and Secured by Design Homes 2024 guidelines.
