But while the ecommerce boom is good news for shoppers, it’s creating huge problems in the lobbies, receptions and communal entrances of buildings everywhere. And a new phenomenon, ‘Parcel Piracy’, is a growing concern for police, retailers, couriers, building owners, occupiers and more.

‘Piracy’ may well be a word we normally associate with the high seas, but it’s now come to our high rises and the rest of the built environment too. From luxury towers to social housing flats and everything in-between. ‘Parcel Piracy’ is the name given to the theft of packages from buildings and is especially prevalent where there’s not enough secure delivery or storage space for the increasing number of deliveries. Thefts are carried out by other residents, members of the public and even crafty couriers who drop parcels off, take a photo to prove delivery – and then help themselves to others lying around.
Shockingly, ten parcels are lost or stolen in the UK every minute*. And although crime has fallen overall in the country over the last decade, the Design Council reports that “as society and technology have evolved, new crime challenges have emerged” – and parcel theft is at the top of the pile.
But that’s not all. Another crime that’s on the increase as a result of parcels being left in public view is potentially even more serious: identity theft.
If you design, own or manage a building, parcel theft isn’t just a loss for your occupants, it can damage your reputation and ultimately your investment too.
