What is a SIB?

A Secure Information Box helps save lives by securely storing vital information. It contains key details such as floor plans, single-page orientation plans of the building, and the responsible person’s contact information. During emergencies, fire responders rely on this information so they can act quickly and effectively. Because of this, the Secure Information Box provides immediate access to critical data. As a result, it improves response times and enhances both safety and efficiency in high-pressure situations.

The Law

Following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, both the Fire Industry Association (FIA) and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) took decisive action and introduced the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022. As a result, this legislation came into effect across England in January 2023, strengthening fire safety requirements nationwide.

These regulations state that existing high-rise residential buildings over 18 metres, as well as new builds over 11 metres or 7 storeys, must appoint a responsible person. In turn, this person must maintain hard copies of the building’s floor plans, a single-page orientation plan, and their name along with UK contact details. To ensure this information remains readily available, it must then be stored in a Secure Information Box. As a result, firefighters can quickly access these critical details during emergencies, helping them respond more efficiently and effectively.

This change is now reflected across Building Regulations, the Fire Safety Act 2021, the Secured by Design Homes Guide 2025, and all recognised Codes of Practice. As a result, all Secure Information Boxes must be tested and certified as a complete unit. In other words, this requirement applies not just to the box and not just to the lock; instead, it covers the entire assembly. Therefore, the full unit must be tested, witnessed, and independently verified to STS205 BR2 or LPS 1175 and LPS 1673 — with no exceptions.
