In October 2019 and October 2020, Warrington Fire conducted thorough testing on both our single and banked units, to which we are proud to say that they successfully passed and now adhere to the BS EN 1363-1:2012 standard. This accomplishment ensures our mailboxes provide enhanced safety and reliability in fire escape areas.
2 Hour Fire Rated
Mailbox Range

The Safety Letterbox Company’s Research and Development team worked with WarringtonFire to achieve a full two-hour fire rating for our post boxes. As a result, this certification confirms compliance with BS EN 1363-1:2012 for our specially designed product range.
We are proud to be the first company to reach this milestone.
Pushing the boundaries
Our Fire Rated Letterbox range meets the highest safety standards and delivers a two-hour integrity rating. In addition, it achieves a Class 0 rating by complying with BS 476 Part 7 and BS 476 Part 6.
We test and certify these products through EXOVA Warringtonfire, and they meet the strict requirements of fire officers. As a result, they provide an affordable and reliable solution for Class 0 compliance.
Although the complex design increases production costs, it also delivers superior fire protection. Therefore, our R&D team continues to invest in further testing and development. In addition, they actively expand our product range to meet evolving safety needs.
Manufactured to:

BS 476 – Part 22
This advanced range of Fire Rated Letterbox products delivers a series of features that achieve a two-hour integrity rating. In addition, the complex design increases production costs. However, it meets the higher specifications required by fire officers. As a result, this range provides a compliant and high-performance fire-rated solution.

Class 0 Rating: BS 476 Part 6 & 7
Our products achieve a Class 0 rating by meeting BS476: Part 7 and Part 6 standards. EXOVA Warringtonfire conducted these tests. Consequently, this certification satisfies fire protection requirements and provides an affordable alternative for Class 0 compliance.

Research and Development
Our R&D team worked with Exova Warrington to achieve the first full two-hour fire rating to BS 476 Part 22. As a result, we continue to advance our fire-rated solutions. In addition, we invest in further testing so we can expand our product range and improve performance even further.
Our Range of Fire Rated Mailboxes
Whether you require wall-mounted, recessed, or freestanding options, our fully certified mailboxes comply with BS 476-20:1987 and provide up to two hours of fire resistance.
However, if you choose a product that does not meet the required standards, you risk compromising the fire rating of your property. As a result, this can increase vulnerability during an emergency.
If you are unsure which solution best suits your project, our knowledgeable sales team can help. They provide expert guidance and support you in selecting the right option.
FIRE RATED MAILBOXES
Fire Rated 1 Mailbox
This vertical letterbox uses an in-front, out-front design, making it suitable for wall mounting, wall recessing, or use as a freestanding unit. In addition, its compact depth makes it ideal for installation in walls with limited space and helps optimise the available area.
It is designed to resist the spread of fire for up to two hours. As a result, it also helps maintain the fire integrity of a recessed fire-rated wall for the same duration.
FIRE RATED MAILBOXES
Fire Rated 2 Mailbox
This horizontal letterbox uses an in-front, out-front design, making it suitable for wall mounting, wall recessing, or use as a freestanding unit. In addition, its minimal height allows you to install multiple units in space-restricted areas.
It is engineered to limit the spread of fire for up to two hours. As a result, it also helps maintain the fire integrity of a recessed fire-rated wall for the same duration.
FIRE RATED MAILBOXES
Fire Rated 3 Mailbox
Our Fire Rated 3 Letterbox uses an in-front, out-back design, which makes it ideal for through-the-wall mail processing. It can also be installed both indoors and outdoors. In addition, we offer it in a panel configuration, and we customise it to meet the specific needs of each project.
We fit the mailbox with an inward-sprung hinge on the flap, so it does not fall open during a fire. In addition, we install an intumescent seal around the aperture. When exposed to high temperatures, this seal expands and closes the opening. As a result, it restricts the flow of oxygen into the mailbox and helps improve fire containment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a fire rated letterbox solution?
A fire-rated solution plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and compliance with building regulations, especially in high-risk areas. In addition, these solutions withstand fire for a specified period, and they actively help contain flames while also preventing the spread of smoke.
As a result, this added protection safeguards property and, at the same time, enhances occupant safety during emergencies. Although fire-rated products may involve a higher initial cost, they deliver significant long-term benefits. Therefore, they help protect lives, reduce damage, and ultimately provide a vital and worthwhile investment.
Are there any other fire rated mailbox solutions available?
All mailboxes can be fitted with FireTrace™, a single-use automatic fire extinguishing system. We install FireTrace internally within the mailbox so it can respond directly in the event of a fire.
When a fire starts inside the mailbox, the heat causes the tube to soften. As a result, it punctures at the hottest point, typically around 80ºC. The system then releases the gas directly into the seat of the fire, and it extinguishes the fire at its source.
How long are the fire rated letterboxes tested for?
Mailboxes featured in the Fire Rated BS 476 Part 22 range have been tested for up to ‘two hour integrity’ only. This standard typically tests the material that the product is made of to see if it will ‘fuel a fire’.
Can the dimension of the mailbox or aperture be changed?
No. The Fire Rated range has only been tested at the specified dimensions, so any adjustment in sizing means the mailbox will not meet fire rating standards. We offer three mailbox types that meet these fire standards. These include the FR1 Vertical Mailbox, the FR2 Horizontal product, and the FR3 through-the-wall mailbox.
